Marrakech to Merzouga by Train: Is Train Travel Possible? Complete Guide

Can you take a train from Marrakech to Merzouga? Here is the honest answer on Morocco's rail network, the ONCF-Supratours bus connection, flight alternatives, and realistic road routes.

With Morocco boasting Africa's first high-speed rail line (Al Boraq) and a pristine, modern rail system linking imperial cities, one of the most frequent questions first-time travelers ask is: "Can I take a train from Marrakech to Merzouga to see the Sahara Desert?"

The short and definitive answer is no: there is no train connecting Marrakech to Merzouga, nor does any railway line reach the Sahara Desert from any direction in Morocco.

[!NOTE] Fast-Facts & Train Direct Answer Summary

  • Does a Train Reach Merzouga? No. Morocco's national railway (ONCF) terminates in Marrakech. The towering High Atlas Mountains (rising over 4,000 meters) form an impenetrable natural barrier to heavy rail.
  • The Closest Rail Stations: Marrakech (Gare de Marrakech) to the west (~560 km / 9–10 hours by road) and Fes (Gare de Fès-Ville) to the north (~470 km / 7.5–8.5 hours by road).
  • The Official Rail-to-Road Link: ONCF operates a dedicated coach affiliate called Supratours. You can book an integrated rail-plus-coach journey, but the mountain crossing is performed entirely by bus.
  • The Fastest Public Alternative: Train from Marrakech to Casablanca Voyageurs (2h 40m) ➔ Royal Air Maroc flight to Errachidia Airport ERH (1h 10m) ➔ 1.5-hour private transfer to Merzouga dunes.
  • The Recommended Route: A 3-Day or 4-Day private 4x4 overland tour via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, Aït Benhaddou, and the Dadès/Todra Gorges.

1. Why There Is No Train to the Sahara: The High Atlas Barrier

To understand why a railway line has never reached southeastern Morocco, one must look at the formidable geology separating Marrakech from the Sahara.

Morocco's national rail operator, the Office National des Chemins de Fer (ONCF), operates over 2,100 kilometers of tracks across the coastal plains and northern agricultural valleys. However, immediately south of Marrakech, the High Atlas mountain chain rises dramatically.

Building a standard passenger railway across the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 meters / 7,415 feet) would require dozens of kilometers of bored alpine tunnels and viaducts through seismically active, fractured granite and schist. The astronomical cost of such an engineering undertaking cannot be economically justified to serve sparse desert populations.

Consequently, Marrakech's majestic marble-and-glass railway station (Gare de Marrakech) in the Guéliz district is a permanent southern terminus for conventional steel-wheel rail.

2. Understanding the "Train + Bus" Workaround (ONCF & Supratours)

While no train tracks cross into the Sahara, travelers often hear about taking "the train to the desert." This confusion stems from Supratours, a wholly-owned passenger bus subsidiary of ONCF.

+---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+
| ONCF VS. SUPRATOURS: UNDERSTANDING THE PARTNERSHIP |
+---------------------+-------------------------------+---------------------------------+
| Entity | ONCF (Railways) | Supratours (Coaches) |
+---------------------+-------------------------------+---------------------------------+
| Vehicle Type | High-speed / Intercity Trains | Long-distance luxury motorcoaches|
| Track Coverage | Tangier, Casa, Rabat, Fes, Kech| Sahara, Atlas, Atlantic south |
| Station Hubs | Major metropolitan terminals | Integrated adjacent bus bays |
| Ticketing System | Single integrated ONCF ticket | Bookable at rail station counters|
| Comfort / Restrooms | Onboard WC, café car, AC | Air-conditioned, reclining seats|
+---------------------+-------------------------------+---------------------------------+

When you ask for a train ticket to Merzouga at a station in Tangier, Casablanca, or Rabat, the booking clerk issues a combined multimodal ticket: you ride the train as far as Marrakech or Fes, walk outside the station terminal to the dedicated Supratours coach bays, and board a direct long-distance bus into the desert.

The Direct Marrakech-to-Merzouga Supratours Bus Reality

Supratours does operate a direct daily coach between Marrakech and Merzouga. However, travelers should evaluate the physical demands of this public bus route before booking:

  • Departure: Typically departs Marrakech Supratours station (adjacent to the train station) at 08:30 AM.
  • Arrival: Pulls into Merzouga village around 20:30 PM to 21:00 PM (over 12 hours later).
  • The Route: Crosses the winding Tizi n'Tichka pass, stopping briefly at Ouarzazate, Skoura, Boumalne Dadès, Tinghir, Tinjdad, Erfoud, and Rissani before reaching Merzouga.
  • The Drawback: You arrive in the desert well after dark. You miss the magical late-afternoon sunset camel trek into the dunes, you miss touring the UNESCO World Heritage ksar of Aït Benhaddou, and you cannot stop for scenic photography at the sheer 300-meter limestone cliffs of Todra Gorge.

3. The 4 Real Ways to Travel from Marrakech to Merzouga

Since a direct train does not exist, how should you make the 560-kilometer journey? Here is how the four real transit methods compare side-by-side:

4. Option 1: The Private 3-Day or 4-Day Desert Crossing (The Benchmark)

For 95% of international travelers, booking an organized private overland crossing is vastly superior to taking public transit. The 560 kilometers between Marrakech and Erg Chebbi contain some of the most culturally significant and visually breathtaking scenery on the African continent.

Why Breaking the Drive Matters

Instead of suffering through 12 exhausting hours on a public bus bench, a multi-day private tour breaks the transit into manageable 4- to 5-hour driving segments:

  1. Day 1: Cross the dramatic High Atlas, explore the fortified earth-and-timber labyrinth of Aït Benhaddou (where Gladiator and Lawrence of Arabia were filmed), and sleep in a tranquil riverside kasbah hotel in the Dadès Gorge.
  2. Day 2: Hike beneath the soaring 300-meter cliffs of Todra Gorge, tour an Erfoud prehistoric fossil atelier, and arrive at the base of the Erg Chebbi dunes in the late afternoon. Here, you transition to a camel caravan to ride across the golden crests into a luxury desert camp before sunset.
  3. Day 3: Wake for the Saharan sunrise, enjoy a warm Berber breakfast, and either return to Marrakech via the dramatic southern N12 Draa Valley corridor or continue north across the Middle Atlas to Fes.

5. Option 2: The High-Speed Flight Shortcut via Errachidia (ERH)

If you have your heart set on experiencing Moroccan train travel while simultaneously avoiding the long 10-hour drive over the High Atlas, there is an ingenious Train + Flight combination:

 [Gare de Marrakech]
          |
          | ONCF Al Atlas Train (2 hours 40 minutes)
          v
[Gare de Casa-Voyageurs / Casablanca Airport (CMN)]
          |
          | Royal Air Maroc Domestic Flight (1 hour 10 minutes)
          v
[Moulay Ali Cherif Airport, Errachidia (ERH)]
          |
          | Private 4x4 Transfer via N13 Highway (1 hour 45 minutes)
          v
[Merzouga Dunes / Erg Chebbi Luxury Camp]

How This Route Operates

  1. Take the Train to Casablanca: Board a morning ONCF train from Marrakech to Casablanca Voyageurs (or directly connect via the airport train line). Fares cost ~110–180 MAD (€10–€17) for a spacious First Class seat.
  2. Fly Direct to the Desert's Edge: Royal Air Maroc (RAM) operates scheduled domestic jet flights from Casablanca Mohammed V Airport (CMN) to Errachidia (ERH). Flight time is just 70 minutes, with fares starting around 450–800 MAD (€42–€75).
  3. Short Desert Transfer: Errachidia is located only 130 km north of Merzouga. A pre-arranged private transfer with MerzougaWay meets you at the ERH terminal gate and whisks you to your desert camp in under two hours along flat, paved highway.

6. How to Book Moroccan Train & Bus Tickets Without Card Glitches

If you plan to use Moroccan rail for other legs of your journey (such as Tangier to Casablanca on the 320 km/h Al Boraq, or Casablanca to Fes), keep these crucial operational tips in mind:

The Foreign Credit Card Payment Issue

The official ONCF web portal (oncf-voyages.ma) and Supratours website rely on the Moroccan Center of Electronic Banking (CMI). This gateway frequently triggers anti-fraud blocks on foreign Visa and Mastercard debit/credit cards, resulting in mysterious checkout errors.

  • The Solution: Purchase your train tickets in person immediately upon arrival at any ONCF station ticket counter. Stations accept foreign cards via physical chip-and-PIN terminals or cash in Moroccan Dirhams.
  • Advance Booking Window: Conventional trains (Al Atlas) rarely sell out completely; buying tickets 24 to 48 hours in advance is sufficient. High-speed Al Boraq first-class tickets and Supratours Merzouga bus tickets should be secured 3 to 5 days in advance during holiday peaks.

🚆 Multi-Modal Rail & Desert Bus Connections: Marrakech to Fes to Merzouga

Because Morocco's railway network terminates at Marrakech and does not penetrate south through the High Atlas, independent travelers looking to maximize train travel can combine national rail with desert express coaches via Fes:

  • Left-Luggage & Facilities at Gare de Fes: If you choose this rail-and-bus route, the Fes railway station (Gare de Fes-Ville) offers clean restrooms, international ATMs, coffee shops, and secure luggage storage. You can drop your backpacks and take a 10-minute red Petit Taxi (15 MAD) to the blue gate of Bab Bou Jeloud for a leisurely sunset dinner before boarding your night coach to Erg Chebbi.
  • Why Private 4x4 Remains Superior: While the train-and-bus combination is budget-friendly for solo backpackers, it consumes almost 20 hours of continuous transit and bypasses the UNESCO World Heritage Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, the Dades Valley, and the Todra Gorge entirely.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is there any train connecting Marrakech directly to Merzouga?

No. There is no railway line connecting Marrakech (or any Moroccan city) directly to Merzouga or the Sahara Desert. The national rail network operated by ONCF terminates in Marrakech in the south and in Fes/Meknes/Oujda in the north. The High Atlas Mountains prevent rail construction to the desert.

What is the closest train station to the Merzouga Sahara Desert?

The two closest railway stations to Merzouga are Gare de Fès-Ville in Fes (approx. 470 km / 7.5 to 8.5 hours by road to the north) and Gare de Marrakech in Marrakech (approx. 560 km / 9 to 10 hours by road to the west). From either station, onward travel to Merzouga must be completed by road.

Can I book a combined ONCF train and Supratours bus ticket to Merzouga?

Yes. ONCF owns the Supratours coach company. You can purchase a combined ticket at major railway stations (such as Tangier, Casablanca, or Rabat) that covers your train journey to Marrakech or Fes, followed by a connecting Supratours long-distance coach directly to Merzouga.

How long does the bus take from Marrakech to Merzouga?

The direct daily Supratours public bus departs Marrakech in the morning around 08:30 AM and arrives in Merzouga around 20:30–21:00 PM, taking approximately 12 to 12.5 hours. It makes brief passenger stops in major towns along the N9 and N10 highways, but does not allow time for sightseeing.

Are there sleeper trains to the desert in Morocco?

No. Morocco operates only one overnight sleeper train service, which runs between Tangier and Marrakech (passing through Casablanca). There are no sleeper trains anywhere in southern Morocco or toward the Sahara Desert.

What is the best way to travel between Marrakech and Merzouga?

The most comfortable, scenic, and rewarding way is booking a private 3-day or 4-day tour with MerzougaWay. This splits the long drive over two days, includes private visits to Aït Benhaddou and Todra Gorge, provides an air-conditioned 4x4 with an experienced local driver, and includes a luxury desert camp stay with camel trekking.

We traveled to Morocco in a group of 6 adults, including my parents, who are already seniors, in the middle of summer. For my family it was a leap of faith to trust an agency we found online for the first time, but it turned out to be a wonderful surprise. Hamid, the trip organizer, was very kind and attentive both before and throughout the whole tour. It was a fully personalized tour - we got to do everything we wanted, from visiting the Sahara to enjoying the beach. He always looked out for our comfort, especially my parents': comfortable transport, well-timed stops at places with restrooms, beautiful air-conditioned hotels, and varied, plentiful food. Thanks to his organization we were able to enjoy the trip with real peace of mind. It was a great experience we would absolutely recommend.

Last week I did a self-drive trip from Fes to Merzouga, leaving the car rental, the riad in Merzouga, the desert camp, and the guided desert activities all in the hands of MerzougaWay and Hamid, and I can only say that everything was perfectly organized, right on time. Thanks to everyone at the riad we stayed at and the desert camp, as well as the guides who joined us for the 4x4 experience, Berber culture, and the camel transfer. Thanks to Hamid and MerzougaWay for that quad-bike ride back to the riad from the camp - what an experience, riding a quad across the dunes early in the morning. If you're thinking of traveling to Merzouga, I definitely recommend Hamid as the organizer of your adventure.

Trustworthy tour agency. I wrote Hamid what I wanted and he just made it happen. He arranged everything so quick and smooth. We had a 3-day Merzouga tour from Marrakech. Said was our guide and he made me and my wife very comfortable. He took us from our riad and carried us in his modern 4x4 Toyota to magnificent places. He gave us the confidence to ask him whatever we wanted to do and wherever we wanted to drive - like old friends. He is open-minded and respectful. I recommend asking the agency for Said to be your driver. In the 3-day tour you cross the Atlas mountains, stay one night in a perfect hotel in Dades with great food, then stay one night in Erg Chebbi dunes in a luxury glamp camp. One night wasn't enough for a real desert experience - if you have time, take two nights in the desert.

Unforgettable holiday. An 8-day itinerant tour in Morocco, including 3 days organized by Hamid - MerzougaWay: a route from Fes to Marrakech, spending a night in the desert and in Ouarzazate. Our guide Youssef, who drove us all along the way, was very professional and took us to try real experiences that not all tourists get to see. Breathtaking landscapes - Morocco amazed and fascinated us. We drove many miles but still traveled comfortably. Absolutely recommend it - they are a highly professional agency and managed to take us to unique places, like a Berber village in the desert where we were the only tourists. A spectacular, unforgettable experience.

Morocco from the heart with MerzougaWay. Heartfelt congratulations to Hamid, who organized our trip impeccably - present, correct, and extremely helpful. A special mention for our driver Ali, who was by our side through 3 intense days toward the desert: attentive, polite, discreet, and a genuinely good, nice driver. We found snow in the Atlas range and then sun in Ait Ben Haddou, visited women's cooperatives working argan oil and roses, saw the Dades Gorges, and finally reached the Sahara dunes by camel before sleeping in a tented desert camp. 3 intense and exciting days. Next time in Morocco I'll rely on you again, inshallah!
