While the vast majority of international travel guides focus on departing from Marrakech, savvy travelers increasingly choose to begin their Moroccan desert odyssey in the imperial northern capital of Fes. If you land at Fes-Saïss International Airport (FEZ) or are exploring the car-free medieval labyrinth of Fes el-Bali, traveling to Merzouga for New Year's Eve is one of the smartest logistical decisions you can make.

The journey from Fes to the golden sand sea of Erg Chebbi is shorter, faster, and geographically more diverse than the classic Marrakech route. Across 465 kilometers of well-paved highway, you transition from ancient imperial walls, through alpine cedar forests inhabited by wild Barbary macaques, across high Middle Atlas mountain passes, and down through the lush date palm canyons of the Ziz Valley before reaching towering Saharan dunes.

Here is your comprehensive guide to spending December 31st beneath the unpolluted stars of the Sahara Desert, departing from Fes.

[!NOTE] Fast-Facts & Fes-to-Merzouga NYE Summary

  • Total Distance & Transit Time: 465 km (289 miles) via National Route 13 (N13); approximately 7.5 to 8.5 hours of scenic driving including stops for lunch, wildlife, and canyon panoramas.
  • Why Start in Fes? The route is roughly 100 km shorter and 2 hours faster than departing from Marrakech, with gentler road gradients.
  • Winter Mountain Passes: The road crosses Col du Zad (2,178m) in the Middle Atlas. While light snow occasionally falls in late December, highway snowplows maintain continuous access. A private 4x4 ensures maximum comfort and safety.
  • The Desert Celebration: Arrive in Merzouga by 16:30 for the sunset camel trek. The evening features an authentic Mechoui (slow-roasted lamb) feast, campfire drumming by native Berber musicians, midnight toasts, and Bortle 1 dark sky stargazing.
  • The Best Itinerary Strategy: Take the 3-Day Fes-to-Marrakech Desert Crossing (Fes ➔ Merzouga Dunes ➔ Todra Gorge ➔ Aït Benhaddou ➔ Marrakech), eliminating all backtracking.

1. Route Comparison: Fes vs. Marrakech Departure

Choosing between departing from Fes or Marrakech to reach the Sahara Desert for New Year's Eve comes down to travel hours, topography, and landscape variety:

+-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+
| SAHARA ROUTE COMPARISON: FES VS. MARRAKECH DEPARTURE |
+--------------------------+------------------------------------+---------------------------------------------+
| Metric / Feature | Fes to Merzouga (N13 Corridor) | Marrakech to Merzouga (N9/N10 Corridor) |
+--------------------------+------------------------------------+---------------------------------------------+
| Distance | 465 km (289 miles) | 560 km (350 miles) |
| Total Driving Time | 7.5 to 8.5 hours | 9.5 to 10.5 hours |
| Major Mountain Pass | Col du Zad (2,178m) - Middle Atlas | Tizi n'Tichka (2,260m) - High Atlas |
| Road Complexity | Gentle curves, wide plateaus | Steep hairpin switchbacks |
| Landscape Transitions | Alpine pine, cedar forest, Ziz palm| Arid foothills, dramatic kasbah river gorges|
| Wildlife Highlights | Wild Barbary Macaques in Azrou | Mountain eagles, oasis goats |
| Recommended Duration | 2 Days (Tight) or 3 Days (Optimal) | Minimum 3 Days (2 Days is grueling) |
+--------------------------+------------------------------------+---------------------------------------------+

Because the Fes route has fewer steep switchbacks than the High Atlas crossing from Marrakech, passengers prone to motion sickness generally find the N13 corridor through the Middle Atlas noticeably smoother and more relaxing.

2. Mile-by-Mile Route Breakdown: Fes to Erg Chebbi (N13 Highway)

Leaving your riad in Fes at 07:30 AM on December 31st embarks you on one of Africa's most breathtaking geological cross-sections:

FES TO MERZOUGA ROUTE ARTERY (N13)

[Fes el-Bali] (Elevation: 410m - Imperial city departure)

      |
      | 20 km through ancient cedar groves
      v
[Azrou Cedar Forest] (Encounter wild Barbary Macaques in snowy forest)
      |
      | Ascent to Col du Zad (2,178m) across volcanic limestone plateaus
      v
[Midelt] (Elevation: 1,500m - The Apple Capital & midway lunch stop)
      |
      | Descent through the Eastern High Atlas (Gorges du Ziz)
      v
[Errachidia & Ziz Valley] (Panoramic canyon with 1,000,000 date palms)
      |
      | Flat pre-Saharan highway past Erfoud fossil workshops
      v
[Rissani & Merzouga Dunes] (Elevation: 700m - Erg Chebbi sand sea arrival)

08:30 — Ifrane: "The Little Switzerland of Morocco"

Your first morning stop is Ifrane, nestled high in the Middle Atlas. Developed during the French protectorate era in the 1920s as a hill station resort, Ifrane features steep-pitched terracotta roofs, European chalet architecture, pristine manicured flower gardens, and its famous carved stone lion monument. In late December, rooftops are frequently dusted with pristine snow.

09:15 — The Ancient Cedar Forests of Azrou

Just 20 minutes beyond Ifrane lies the ancient Cèdre Gouraud Forest. Towering Atlas cedar trees (Cedrus atlantica) provide the natural habitat for troops of wild Barbary Macaques (Macaca sylvanus). Travelers can observe these sociable, thick-furred primates playing among snow-covered branches and mossy rocks.

12:30 — Midelt: Midway Lunch Beneath Mount Ayachi

Cradled between the Middle Atlas and the soaring eastern crest of the High Atlas, Midelt is Morocco's apple-farming capital. It serves as the natural midpoint of the journey. Here, travelers enjoy a warming mountain lunch—such as hot clay-pot lamb tagine with prunes or roasted spiced chicken skewers—before continuing south.

14:30 — The Gorges du Ziz & The Great Tafilalet Oasis

Past the engineering marvel of the Tunnel du Légionnaire, the terrain dramatically fractures. The road tracks the emerald-green Ziz River as it carves through colossal red limestone canyon walls.

At the famous Ziz Valley Viewpoint, you look down upon a serpentine sea of more than one million date palms winding through ancient earthen fortified ksour—one of the most breathtaking geographic vistas in North Africa.

16:30 — Arrival in Merzouga: Transitioning to the Dunes

Leaving behind the fossil workshops of Erfoud and the historic caravan gates of Rissani, the paved road brings you directly to the foot of Erg Chebbi. Here, you trade the 4x4 for your private camel caravan just as the afternoon sun casts long, amber shadows across the 150-meter-tall dunes.

3. The New Year's Eve Desert Camp Experience: What Actually Happens

Spending December 31st inside a secluded desert camp among the dunes of Erg Chebbi is an intimate, deeply spiritual, and celebratory ritual.

The Sunset Camel Trek into Camp

As the afternoon light shifts from yellow to burnt terracotta, your camel caravan winds silently through the deep valleys of Erg Chebbi. Midway to camp, you dismount and hike up the soft crest of a major dune ridge to watch the final sunset of the year dip below the western horizon.

The Royal Saharan Gala Feast

Dinner on New Year's Eve is an elaborate feast prepared by local Saharan chefs:

  • The Mezze Table: Roasted eggplant zaalouk, spiced beetroot puree, preserved-lemon marinated olives, and freshly baked flatbreads.
  • The Centerpiece Mechoui: A whole young mountain lamb seasoned with coarse desert salt and wild cumin, slow-roasted for six hours in an underground clay pit until the meat falls away effortlessly from the bone.
  • Royal Couscous: Steaming organic semolina topped with caramelized sweet onions, chickpeas, and winter vegetables.
  • Dessert: Moroccan almond pastries (cornes de gazelle), sweet Medjool dates, and fresh sliced oranges sprinkled with cinnamon.

The Campfire Drumming Circle & The Midnight Skies

Following dinner, everyone gathers around a roaring bonfire built from fragrant desert tamarisk wood. Indigenous Berber hosts and Gnawa musicians bring out bendirs (goatskin drums) and qraqeb (iron castanets), singing ancestral polyrhythmic desert poetry.

At midnight, glasses are raised to welcome the new year. As the lanterns are dimmed, you look up into an official Bortle Class 1 dark sky—unpolluted by city lights for hundreds of kilometers. The Milky Way arches with diamond brilliance, shooting stars streak across the constellations, and a profound, tranquil silence settles over the dunes.

The #1 Recommended Route: 3-Day Fes-to-Marrakech Crossing

By far the most rewarding holiday route is the one-way open-jaw crossing:

  • December 31 (Day 1): Depart Fes ➔ Ifrane ➔ Azrou Cedar Forest ➔ Midelt ➔ Ziz Gorges ➔ Merzouga (New Year's Eve gala & luxury glamping overnight).
  • January 1 (Day 2): First dawn sunrise atop the dunes ➔ Rissani ➔ Todra Gorge (walk beneath 300-meter cliffs) ➔ Dadès Valley. Overnight in a romantic gorge kasbah hotel.
  • January 2 (Day 3): Dadès Valley ➔ Valley of the Roses ➔ Ouarzazate cinema studios ➔ Aït Benhaddou UNESCO ksar ➔ Tizi n'Tichka High Atlas crossing ➔ Marrakech arrival.

This route ensures you never drive the same road twice, experiencing both imperial capitals, the Middle Atlas, the Sahara Desert, the Dadès Gorges, and the High Atlas in one seamless holiday journey.

5. Winter Weather & What to Pack for Dec 31 in the Desert

The Sahara Desert is an environment of dramatic thermal extremes. While daytime hours on December 31st are crisp and sunny (averaging 18°C–21°C / 64°F–70°F), desert sand loses heat immediately once the sun disappears.

Essential Packing Checklist for Your Bivouac Daypack

  • Thermal Underwear & Fleece: Merino wool base layers and a high-loft down or fleece jacket for campfire drumming and midnight stargazing.
  • Beanie, Warm Scarf & Gloves: Essential for the early morning sunrise climb when desert air is coldest.
  • Headlamp or Flashlight: For walking between your private tent and the dining pavilion without blinding your night-vision.
  • High-Capacity Power Bank: Cold nighttime temperatures drain smartphone and camera lithium batteries significantly faster.
  • Comfortable Slip-On Shoes: Emptying sand from lace-up sneakers is tedious; slip-on boots or closed shoes make tent entry effortless.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How long does the drive take from Fes to Merzouga for New Year's Eve?

The driving distance from Fes to Merzouga along paved Highway N13 is 465 kilometers (289 miles). With scenic stops in Ifrane, the Azrou cedar forest, a lunch stop in Midelt, and panoramic photo stops in the Ziz Valley, the journey takes 7.5 to 8.5 hours.

Is the road from Fes to Merzouga open during winter snowfalls?

Yes, Highway N13 is a primary national arterial route that remains open throughout the winter. While the high mountain pass of Col du Zad (2,178m) in the Middle Atlas occasionally receives snowfall in late December, Moroccan Ministry of Equipment snowplows clear the road promptly. Traveling in a modern 4x4 with a seasoned professional driver guarantees complete winter safety.

What is included in a New Year's Eve desert camp package from Fes?

Standard luxury packages with MerzougaWay include private air-conditioned 4x4 transport with an English-speaking driver, scenic stops along the N13, sunset camel trekking into the dunes, a private luxury canvas tent with heating and en-suite hot shower, a festive New Year's Eve multi-course banquet (including traditional Mechoui roast lamb), live Berber drumming around the campfire, and sunrise breakfast on New Year's Day.

Can the tour continue to Marrakech instead of returning to Fes?

Yes! The 3-Day or 4-Day Fes-to-Marrakech Desert Crossing is our most popular holiday itinerary. After spending New Year's Eve in Merzouga, the tour continues westward through Todra Gorge, Dadès Valley, and the UNESCO fortress of Aït Benhaddou before crossing the High Atlas Mountains into Marrakech, eliminating all backtracking.

Do I need to book a New Year's Eve desert tour from Fes in advance?

Yes, early booking is essential. December 31st is the single busiest night of the year in the Sahara Desert. High-end luxury camps with private en-suite bathrooms and heating units strictly limit guest capacity to preserve an intimate atmosphere. Camps and private 4x4 vehicles typically sell out 4 to 8 weeks in advance.

What should I wear for New Year's Eve in the desert?

Dress in layers. During the daytime drive and afternoon camel ride, light breathable clothing or light sweaters are comfortable. For the evening campfire celebration and midnight countdown, pack heavy thermal base layers, a fleece or down jacket, a warm woolen hat, and gloves, as night temperatures in the desert regularly drop to 2°C–5°C (35°F–41°F).

We traveled to Morocco in a group of 6 adults, including my parents, who are already seniors, in the middle of summer. For my family it was a leap of faith to trust an agency we found online for the first time, but it turned out to be a wonderful surprise. Hamid, the trip organizer, was very kind and attentive both before and throughout the whole tour. It was a fully personalized tour - we got to do everything we wanted, from visiting the Sahara to enjoying the beach. He always looked out for our comfort, especially my parents': comfortable transport, well-timed stops at places with restrooms, beautiful air-conditioned hotels, and varied, plentiful food. Thanks to his organization we were able to enjoy the trip with real peace of mind. It was a great experience we would absolutely recommend.

Last week I did a self-drive trip from Fes to Merzouga, leaving the car rental, the riad in Merzouga, the desert camp, and the guided desert activities all in the hands of MerzougaWay and Hamid, and I can only say that everything was perfectly organized, right on time. Thanks to everyone at the riad we stayed at and the desert camp, as well as the guides who joined us for the 4x4 experience, Berber culture, and the camel transfer. Thanks to Hamid and MerzougaWay for that quad-bike ride back to the riad from the camp - what an experience, riding a quad across the dunes early in the morning. If you're thinking of traveling to Merzouga, I definitely recommend Hamid as the organizer of your adventure.

Trustworthy tour agency. I wrote Hamid what I wanted and he just made it happen. He arranged everything so quick and smooth. We had a 3-day Merzouga tour from Marrakech. Said was our guide and he made me and my wife very comfortable. He took us from our riad and carried us in his modern 4x4 Toyota to magnificent places. He gave us the confidence to ask him whatever we wanted to do and wherever we wanted to drive - like old friends. He is open-minded and respectful. I recommend asking the agency for Said to be your driver. In the 3-day tour you cross the Atlas mountains, stay one night in a perfect hotel in Dades with great food, then stay one night in Erg Chebbi dunes in a luxury glamp camp. One night wasn't enough for a real desert experience - if you have time, take two nights in the desert.

Unforgettable holiday. An 8-day itinerant tour in Morocco, including 3 days organized by Hamid - MerzougaWay: a route from Fes to Marrakech, spending a night in the desert and in Ouarzazate. Our guide Youssef, who drove us all along the way, was very professional and took us to try real experiences that not all tourists get to see. Breathtaking landscapes - Morocco amazed and fascinated us. We drove many miles but still traveled comfortably. Absolutely recommend it - they are a highly professional agency and managed to take us to unique places, like a Berber village in the desert where we were the only tourists. A spectacular, unforgettable experience.

Morocco from the heart with MerzougaWay. Heartfelt congratulations to Hamid, who organized our trip impeccably - present, correct, and extremely helpful. A special mention for our driver Ali, who was by our side through 3 intense days toward the desert: attentive, polite, discreet, and a genuinely good, nice driver. We found snow in the Atlas range and then sun in Ait Ben Haddou, visited women's cooperatives working argan oil and roses, saw the Dades Gorges, and finally reached the Sahara dunes by camel before sleeping in a tented desert camp. 3 intense and exciting days. Next time in Morocco I'll rely on you again, inshallah!
